Why on Earth is Holdo one of your favourites? She only exists to be the stereotypical arrogant commander, with the “twist” being that she supposedly isn’t screwing up after all. Demanding unquestioning obedience to orders is generally something you expect among the BAD guys – she didn’t say “You dare question my orders?” but she may as well have. Also, her escape plan was to a known rebel base on a planet close enough to show a visible disk, so not a _great_ plan. I liked the half of the film with Luke and Rey, but the rest was one long game of Idiot Ball.

I think that this sort of meta-analysis with this level of hostility is uniquely unhelpful and helps paint the fandom in a bad light. Either you want to look at the function of every character in a meta way, in which case you need to decide what roles and what actions have value and then treat that in an even-handed way, or else you need to look at the characters as they exist in the world, rather than cynically looking at their functions in the scaffolding of a three-act structure.

But in either case, this is wrong. We’re riding along Poe’s coat-tails and Holdo is in Poe’s way. This makes her meta-role pretty clear: she’s an antagonist along Poe’s storyline, and one who proves to have had a damn good point, if you step out of the scaffolding and look at the story as an experience instead of a creation. Once Poe, Rose, and Finn’s plan fails and results in the rebels getting slaughtered in space, it’s really clear why Holdo opposed Poe’s heroics and wanted him to sit on his hands for a while. She’s frustrating to the viewer because we sympathize with Poe. That’s what antagonists do.
