I HAVE SUCH SIGHTS TO SHOW YOU

I HAVE SUCH SIGHTS TO SHOW YOU published on No Comments on I HAVE SUCH SIGHTS TO SHOW YOU

This comic is dedicated to our friend, Todd, who is awesome whenever an opportunity presents itself–or doesn’t–and who is also fairly open about being asexual. Ramen Empire has never been great at separating real people from the characters that parody them, and in that sense, it’s a journal comic. But Todd the friend is also Todd the character in a way that is much more direct than any of the other parallels that my friends will see in the strips. The running joke in our little circle is that Todd is some sort of evil spirit who can shadow-step great distances, see you when you’re sleeping, know when you’re awake–yeah, he’s basically terrifying Santa, with better hair. He gets a kick out of those jokes, so I want comic-Todd to be an embodiment of those creepy horror elements that he seems to embrace.

In celebration of such an amiable friend, I want a big theme of one of Afterglow’s arcs to be asexual awareness, and Todd (the character) is our foil for that. That’s… probably not going to be obvious for a while, but Twilight as subject material for parody, though dated, was a very deliberate choice. There are a lot of really cool, asexual figures in literature that aren’t thought of as such, and I think at least some people are so bent out of shape by stories like Twilight because of the overly sexual appropriation of those figures. If you’re sick of vampires, no worries. That’s not what Todd is. He might not be anything more than a special effects expert. After all, those could have been rubber bats, LED lights, and a vivid, deliberately triggered hallucination. Other explanations for what was witnessed above are outlandish.

Panel Four is our love letter to Redminus’s Nyan Caxx video. I apologize for nothing, except, perhaps, making a special Photoshop brush shaped like a Vlad-the-Impaler victim.

I’m throwing a free short story up on Patreon. Feel free to share it around!

It’s called “All Coated in Bonemeal,” and it originally appeared in Arcane #1. It gives the sordid details of an unlikely friendship between an necromancer and an intolerable neighbor. I’ve always been happy with this story, and shortly after I put it up on Patreon, a friend of mine started getting hoity toity questions about its thematic elements. Made me happy. My beard got all bristly. It does that sometimes.

There are other stories up on Patreon, so if you like All Coated in Bonemeal, subscribe! There’s more where it came from, and I’ll be putting new stories up there at a fairly regular basis.

Oh. And Happy New Year!

We should really name our characters

It’s been too long since we made comics. What the hell happened to my kerning? I don’t even. More next week, around Friday. I swear this is going somewhere.

Update:

Fixed the weird font problem.

We’ve slipped a little behind schedule. Monday is supposed to be for our off-topic comic (which is currently WildStar fanfic, and will be for a while. Because espers.) Instead it’s Tuesday and we’re putting up now the comic meant for Friday.

Our current goal is to play catch-up on Wednesday and update both Ramen Empire and the WildStar comic, but there are also a boat-load of commissions, including a short comic set in the world of Magillicutty. Woo!

Zach wants to start doing fan art every week. I’m pushing for him to draw Mal and Inara (from that Firefly show no one’s ever heard of) shipping nice and proper, but he’s decided to open it up to votes. So if you have any requests for fan art, drop ’em in the comments.

This link is nothing at all.
